| Jeanine Coupe Ryding Artist Statement Woodcut Prints Working from the background outward, images rest upon or are caught between printed layers of ink. My approach to woodcut prints is painterly and inventive. Beginning as drawings or sketches on paper, forms are redrawn onto woodblocks where they are carved and printed. Many of the ideas for these forms are influenced by natural history illustration where they are taken out of their scientific realm and placed next to invented shapes that invite us to see the familiar in a new way. The horizontal format presents a panorama for the eye to move across the shapes and marks. The vertical format is influenced by my study of Japanese and Chinese scrolls. I am interested in seeing what woodcut print making has to offer beyond the narrative, fixed and graphics. I am looking for the fluid playful and personal as I work. |
